Noggin (NOG) is a protein first identified in Xenopus-italics that plays a vital role in the dorsal fate specification during embryogenesis. A similar protein was also found in mammals and is vital during the various processes of morphogenesis. Noggin is mainly expressed in specific regions of brain such as cerebellum, olfactory bulb, and the piriform cortex. It interacts with various transcription factors such as Wnt, Hox, Sox, Pax and Pou gene products. Noggin has been identified as an inhibitor of the TGF-β signalling pathway and is involved in neural induction and maturation of neurons, in development of the central nervous system.
