It maintains the assembly and mechanical stability by acting as a scaffold. Collagen type IV alpha 3 chain (COL4A3) mutations are associated with Alport syndrome (AS). Heterozygous mutations in the COL4A4 gene are observed in individuals with benign familial hematuria (BFH). Alterations in the COL4A3 gene also result in diabetic kidney disease from maturity-onset diabetes. |
