General description【一般描述】 | The isozymes human carboxylesterase 1 (hCE-1, CES1A1, HU1) and carboxylesterase 2 (hCE-2, hiCE, HU3) are a serine esterase involved in both drug metabolism and activation. hCE-2 (intestine, liver), found predominantly in the small intestine, plays a role in lipid metablolism and recognizes substrates with a large alcohol groups and small acyl groups. H-CE-1 substrate specificity may be restricted by a capability of acyl-hCE-2 conjugate formation due to the presence of conformational interference in the active pocket. |

Biochem/physiol Actions【生化/生理作用】 | Carboxylesterase 2 is a member of a large multigene family. The enzymes are responsible for the hydrolysis of ester- and amide-bond-containing drugs such as cocaine and heroin. They also hydrolize long-chain fatty acid esters and thioesters. The specific function of this enzyme has not yet been determined; however, it is speculated that carboxylesterases may play a role in lipid metabolism and/or the blood-brain barrier system.Carboxylesterase 2 is a member of a large multigene family. The enzymes encoded by these genes are responsible for the hydrolysis of ester- and amide-bond-containing drugs such as cocaine and heroin. They also hydrolize long-chain fatty acid esters and thioesters. The specific function of this enzyme has not yet been determined; however, it is speculated that carboxylesterases may play a role in lipid metabolism and/or the blood-brain barrier system. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been found for this gene. |
