The gene encoding aldehyde dehydrogenase 8 family member A1 (ALDH8A1) is localized on human chromosome 6q23. The ALDH8A1 mRNA is expressed in the liver and kidneys.

The antibody detects endogenous levels of total ALDH8A1 protein.

Aldehyde dehydrogenase 8 family member A1 (ALDH8A1) converts 9-cis-retinal into 9-cis-retinoic acid, which is the ligand of the retinoid X receptor. It may play a role in the 9-cis-retinal metabolic pathway.
